There’s nothing like the sound of a kookoo clock ringing out the hour. I really don’t know anyone who doesn’t like this type of clock for just the sheer fun on it. You have to admit that it is rather novel with its small bird popping out and the clock singing out “kookoo” for every hour passed.

A kookoo clock is a favorite all over the world. Clock collectors cherish the kookoo clock for its handcrafted detail and quality clock mechanism. These clocks can be very expensive, dependent on how elegant the design. According to experts, old kookoo clocks are one of the most expensive antique clocks nowadays.

During auctions, whether online or offline, the old kookoo clocks are the most sought after and usually the first ones to sell. These unique and valuable clocks are usually a hit at the serious auction houses with bidding becoming quite brisk and prices rising rapidly.

Where Did the KooKoo Clock Come From?

The kookoo time piece derived its name from a bird of the same name that is endemic to geographical regions such as Asia and Africa. This type of bird comes in gray colors with the female having red head feathers forming a crown. You can see how this unusual bird could inspire its own clock!

Originally, the kookoo clock was developed in the Black Forest region of Germany. In the middle of the 17th century, Franz Anton Ketterer created a kookoo timepiece where he was able to reproduce the sound of the kookoo bird. This invention gave notoriety to the Black Forest area and it became known worldwide for its high quality clocks.

How Did This Clock Become So Popular?

These clocks became such a novelty that they were sent to different parts of the world as gifts to Royalty, prominent families and ordinary people alike. As the word spread of these unique clocks, visitors came to the area to seek out the makers of the kookoo clock. During the summer, the villagers from the Black Forest area of Germany would sell their clocks on the streets and earn a handsome price for their unique time pieces.

Flash back to today’s modern kookoo clock – usually a battery powered version of the classic clock. Of course, you can still find the original hand manufactured version being sold in better clock stores. But as times change, so does the technology. Perhaps the modern version keeps a little better track of time, but in our opinion, there is nothing like the original. A handcrafted kookoo clock from the Black Forest has a history that just can’t be replaced with a few batteries and some “bells and whistles”.

Note: In case you were wondering, the kookoo clock is also known as a cuckoo clock in certain regions, but is still pronounced the same.
